This figure compares sea surface temperatures across the world in June of two different years, 1988 a normal year, and 1993, a (weak) El Niño year. The major difference is the dominance of warm surface waters off the coast of Central and South America. The tongue of cool water extending westward from the coast of Ecuador in 1988 is almost entirely absent in 1993. The temperature data were obtained from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Courtesy Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
